Greenway Institute is thrilled to welcome our founding President and Co-Founder, Mark Somerville, Ph.D.
Mark is an internationally recognized expert in transforming engineering education and has consulted around the world on designing and launching innovative educational programs. A former founding faculty member, dean of faculty, and provost at Olin College, Mark is poised to leverage his experience and radically redesign engineering education at Greenway College. Mark understands that the complexity of today’s sustainability challenges demand that we push beyond what most established institutions could imagine or execute. As a mission driven startup, Greenway College has a vision for hands-on, work-integrated learning that will graduate debt-free engineers with the skills and mindsets needed to power our growing green energy and technology sectors. Mark is collaborating on this game changing venture with a talented team of doers and thinkers and with strong support from industry and educational leaders, entrepreneurs, and policy makers.
Should you ever want to see Mark light up, ask him about his creative family. He and his wife of 26 years, Babette Wills, have two adult daughters, the eldest of whom is an artisanal baker while her sister is a professional circus artist. Of course, there’s also Mark’s passion for ceramics, cycling, and cooking. On the more serious side, if you ever have questions about how to make the perfect espresso, Mark is your sage. We have lost count of the number of coffee machines in his possession. Playful quirks and all, Mark embodies the skills and traits Greenway College aims to cultivate and co-create with our future students.
