We wish you a happy spring! We’ve been hard at work preparing for exciting new things in 2023. Here are some updates on what’s been happening at Greenway Institute.
The Greenway Center for Equity and Sustainability Welcomes a Founding Faculty Member
As the Greenway Center for Equity and Sustainability (GCES) prepares for launch, it is excited to announce the hiring of founding faculty member, Dr. Rachel Koh. Koh comes to GCES from Smith College’s department of engineering, where they taught engineering courses in Fluid Mechanics, Solid Mechanics, Sustainable Materials, and Dynamics. At GCES, Koh will develop, pilot and teach our innovative, 100% hands-on, project-based, lecture-free engineering modules and programs. They will work to develop sustainable engineering courses and programs and support the development of a collaborative and inclusive culture on campus. Koh brings research expertise in wind turbine design and plant-based composite materials.
Dr. Koh shares Greenway’s ambition to redesign engineering education and believes in the mission to empower every student to thrive in engineering. GCES is thrilled to bring in Dr. Koh as it gets to work preparing current and next generations to engineer an equitable and sustainable future!
Greenway Center for Equity and Sustainability Launches Semester Away Program at Brand New Innovation Campus
The Greenway Center for Equity and Sustainability, in partnership with Elizabethtown College, is excited to announce the launch of its new Semester Away program! The program will launch in Fall 2023 in Montpelier, Vermont.
The Semester Away program aims to strengthen the sense of purpose and confidence in sophomore engineering students through hands-on, sustainable engineering philosophies. The program is built around community-based sustainable engineering problems that drive both technical (e.g., engineering, math, science) and nontechnical (e.g., social science, communications) components of the field. In teams, the students will tackle sustainable technology issues that are meaningful to local communities and business partners. Through the program, students will ways how engineers can help design and build our equitable and sustainable future.
The GCES will operate as an extension of Elizabethtown College’s engineering department. Each Greenway course has a defined set of learning objectives that mirror an Elizabethtown course. Across the semester, students will work on sustainable technology projects and problems that span multiple courses and target these learning objectives. By building these projects, students will acquire math, science, and engineering skills while discovering real world applications of sustainable technology.
