We wish you a happy holiday season! As we wrap up the year, we’re looking forward to longer days and more sunlight. In the meantime, here are some updates on what’s been happening at Greenway Institute.
Join Our Founding Team!
In partnership with Elizabethtown College, Greenway Institute is launching the Greenway Center for Equity and Sustainability. This novel engineering program will launch in the fall of 2023. We seek founding faculty and staff to help design and build our unique program– faculty who share our core commitments to equity and engineering for sustainability. Come have fun and work hard with us. See the descriptions of our positions for Engineering Faculty (at any rank) and an Engineering Program Manager at these links.
With the support of the National Science Foundation, these faculty and staff will collaborate with colleagues at Elizabethtown College to redesign college engineering for the purposes of equity and sustainability. In interviews and outreach with students, we’ve heard the same themes over and over. Students want:
- engineering education that prepares them to tackle the threats to sustainability that dominate our age
- more hands-on learning– learning that feels purposeful and directly applicable to the work of building a better future
- approaches to teaching and assessment that don’t just reward those who already are ahead, but rather focus on supporting and accelerating the learning of those with drive and ambition to become engineers
These new hires will help develop the sustainability semester program (scheduled to launch in Fall of 2023) and our immersive, hands-on first year of sustainable engineering (scheduled to launch in Fall of 2024). GCES will serve as an incubation campus for Elizabethtown College and Greenway Institute. Our team will also develop curricula and protocols for collaborative improvement of teaching that create the nation’s first and best project-based engineering program focused on sustainability and equity.
Empowering young people to build a sustainable world!
Our 2022-23 “Build a Better World” Challenge is underway. Participants this year are tackling engineering challenges related to food access. We received letters of intent from a wide range of schools and the proposals are diverse. Teams have proposed to develop and prototype a range of solar-powered devices, from an auto draw system for a maple syrup operation to a heating system to support winter growing.
The green energy and technology sector is one of VT’s fastest growing and highest wage sectors at this moment. The skills and capacity for innovation students are developing and demonstrating through this project are both highly sought after in the Vermont workforce and essential to the future vibrancy of Vermont. Thank you to the school faculty who are supporting participation in this challenge.
If you would like to mentor a team or help sponsor a team, please reach out to us at challenge@greenwayinstitute.org.
Thank you for your support in 2022. See you in the New Year!
