Each Friday, Greenway students hit the road to visit Vermont business and agencies in the green energy field. The “Friday Career Trek” program has been a highlight for many of us this semester. One student explained that they look forward to Fridays because, “I love that we are exposed to all kinds of businesses, and potential careers that we might not have considered before.” Not only are students building a network for future internships and careers, but they are also thinking about entrepreneurship. One student noted that, “Hearing many of the businesses explain how they got started has left me wondering about businesses I could start.” By the time they graduate from our program, we hope that every Greenway student will feel a strong sense of belonging and self-efficacy in the field of engineering. These students are the change makers of tomorrow!
We are so grateful to every business and agency that has hosted our students so far this semester. Each one has made a unique impact on our students. A recent trip to Dynapower in South Burlington, had a particular emphasis on career paths in engineering. Our students were able to have a casual conversation with Dynapower engineers about their career paths over lunch. It turned into a very powerful discussion about how to make the most of your education. The Dynapower engineers shared many nuggets of wisdom, and we would like to pass them along to you!
- Ask lots of questions
- Don’t be afraid of failures – they’re learning experiences
- Share your failures – that’s the basis of what engineering is
- Seek out feedback often
- Seek out applications of your coursework in extracurriculars and internships
- Don’t get through college without picking up a wrench
What do you think of this list? Is there any advice that you would add?
If you know of a business that might be a good fit for a Friday Career Trek, please reach out! We are always excited to connect with new partners who can expand our students’ horizons in exciting ways.
